Bird box building at the Beach Party

Wednesday July 26th, 2017 | Stephanie

The 9th of July saw the return of the bi-annual Beach Party, this time in Snailbeach.

The weekend was full of activities, with a scarecrow competition (see our entry below), dog show, fashion and costume show, mine tours, classic car display and much more.

We set up shop at the main fete to welcome and engage with the local community. Amber Bicheno, the LPS trainee, and Joe Penfold were encouraging families to come and build their own nest box to take home, and getting children interested in how to check the boxes for nesting birds in the spring.

Our tent also included displays about the Resting Hill Nest Box Scheme and Curlew Country with some special highlights showing from the wonderful Curlew Cam. Joy Howells conducted two more activities for people to get involved with, making curlew kites and a native tree quiz to test out people’s ID skills.

The day was a great success, with the weather being kind to us and providing brilliant sunshine throughout. Many people expressed their interest and support for the work the scheme has been conducting, and hopefully a few more nest boxes will now be up around the village to benefit the local birds.
