Spend the day with craftsman Neill Mapes learning how to hand carve rustic wooden pots. This vessel making technique goes back to at least Viking times and is an alternative to coopering. A piece of green wood is hollowed out into a tube. A groove is cut near the bottom to accept the base made of seasoned timber, then as the tube dries it shrinks and tightens onto the base.
